Down economy further damages families already fractured by divorce

As a family law practitioner, I see firsthand the tyrannical effect of our declining economy on the family already fractured by divorce. So many separated and divorcing spouses are unable to move on with their lives. Crippling unemployment can make it difficult, if not impossible, to meet support obligations. Mortgages go unpaid, resulting in home foreclosures. There are many couples who are divorcing but unable to physically separate for economic reasons, and are thus forced to remain under the same roof. With bills mounting, and the adversity already existing between two people who don’t belong together, the tension and frustration sometimes lead to physical and emotional abuse, resulting in a court docket teeming with petitions for protection orders.
